Privacy Policy

Tim Brien publishes ControlZ, My Competitors, Hue Analyzer, Hue Test App, Task Manager, Defects Manager, and this website (brien.com.au). The apps are designed to keep your data on your devices and services you choose. This page describes what each surface handles.

brien.com.au (website)

Marketing pages, product overviews, weather and lightning wrappers, and this privacy policy are static content. There is no advertising network and no third-party analytics SDK on these pages.

The feedback form opens your mail client with a message addressed to appsupport@brien.com.au. Form fields are composed in the browser; they are not posted to a brien.com.au server-side database. Optional “include system info” adds browser and screen details to that email only.

Opening Weather or Lightning embeds or links to live tools (Cumulus MX / StormVue) that load station or map data for those pages.

ControlZ

ControlZ is a local-first smart-home controller for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It connects to bridges and services you configure (for example Philips Hue, Conbee/deCONZ, MQTT/Zigbee2MQTT, HomeKit, Home Assistant, HomeSeer HS4, DoorBird, and Sonos). ControlZ does not require a ControlZ cloud account.

Data ControlZ handles

ControlZ may store bridge and room configuration, device state, scenes and automations, preferences, optional local HTTP/WebSocket API settings and API keys, encrypted local backups, and optional private iCloud snapshot backups. WeatherKit may be used for forecasts when enabled.

Sensitive credentials

Integration credentials stay on your device. Storage depends on the connection:

  • Apple Keychain (device-only sidecar): Home Assistant OAuth and long-lived tokens, Sonos Cloud OAuth, Hue Cloud OAuth, and HomeSeer HS4 / MyHS passwords or tokens.
  • On-device SwiftData store (retail builds keep CloudKit off for this store): local bridge secrets such as Hue CLIP / Conbee keys, MQTT / Zigbee2MQTT passwords, Z-Wave JS tokens, and DoorBird username/password, plus bridge metadata.
  • Other on-device storage: Client Sync and related keys may use Keychain and/or UserDefaults; RTSP camera credentials use a separate Keychain store.

Not every secret is Keychain-only. While the primary database CloudKit mode remains off, those SwiftData-held credentials also stay on the device. ControlZ does not intentionally include production bridge tokens in widgets, screenshots, or support messages you send.

Provider connections

ControlZ connects to the local or cloud endpoints you configure for each bridge. Optional LAN HTTP and WebSocket APIs stay on your network when you enable them. Nearby Multipeer transfers may share configuration; cloud OAuth token fields are redacted in those payloads, while some local keys may still be included when you transfer.

Purchases and Apple services

If you purchase through the App Store, Apple processes that purchase under Apple’s policies. ControlZ does not operate a separate web checkout.

My Competitors

My Competitors is a club, association, and competition operations app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It does not require a My Competitors cloud account separate from Apple ID features you choose to use.

Data My Competitors handles

The app may store organisation hierarchy, members (including name, email, and phone where you enter them), coaches, rosters, competition data, timetables, draws, results, training schedules, branding, photos, and related preferences. Apple’s privacy manifest declares name, email, and phone for app functionality, with tracking disabled.

Sensitive data

  • Local secrets store: app user accounts (password hashes), API keys for the optional LAN web server, and Sign in with Apple subject identifiers — not synced via CloudKit.
  • System owner password: stored in the Apple Keychain on device.

iCloud Sync and backups

At first launch (or later in Settings), you may keep the primary competition database on this device only or enable iCloud Sync (private CloudKit database for the same Apple ID). Manual iCloud backup snapshots are separate from continuous sync and also use your private CloudKit database. Secrets described above stay local-only.

Network connections you initiate

  • Optional HTTPS fetch of SET Online / sportdata.org import pages
  • Open-Meteo forecasts when you request event weather
  • Apple MapKit for venue/address search
  • Optional LAN web server and Multipeer backup transfer on the same network
  • Mail for feedback and Communications (your mail provider)

Exported static websites are files you host or share. If you enable embedded maps in an export, viewers’ browsers may load Google Maps. Website contact forms, if enabled, point at endpoints you configure — not a My Competitors backend.

Purchases

There is no in-app subscription checkout operated by My Competitors outside Apple’s App Store when applicable.

Hue Analyzer

Hue Analyzer is a Philips Hue diagnostics app for iPad and Mac. It discovers bridges on your local network, pairs with the link button, and streams CLIP v2 events. It does not use the Hue remote / cloud API and does not require a Hue Analyzer cloud account.

Data Hue Analyzer handles

The app may store bridge credentials in the device Keychain, saved bridge configuration, live and recent event history for the session, device inventory (serial, location, comments, photos), scene rename history, and preferences such as appearance and privacy reveal settings.

Sensitive credentials

Bridge application keys and related secrets stay on your device (Keychain). IP addresses, MAC addresses, bridge IDs, and API usernames are masked in the UI until you choose to reveal them. Exported reports contain only the fields you share — do not include credentials in support emails.

Network connections

Hue Analyzer connects to Philips Hue bridges on your LAN (Bonjour discovery, HTTPS CLIP, and SSE). Optional Philips cloud discovery may be used as a fallback to resolve bridge IP when local browse does not complete. No event data or credentials are uploaded to a Hue Analyzer backend.

Hue Test App

Hue Test App is a minimal Hue bridge reference for iPhone, iPad, and Mac: discover, register, connect SSE, and list devices. It does not use the Hue remote / cloud API.

Data Hue Test App handles

The app may store bridge application keys and discovered bridge metadata on your device for the duration of use. It is intended as a lightweight connectivity sandbox, not a full diagnostics or inventory product.

Network connections

Connections are limited to Hue bridges on your local network (Bonjour, HTTPS registration, SSE, and device list API).

Task Manager

Task Manager is a focused macOS app for tasks, activities, and Markdown import/export. It does not require a Task Manager cloud account and is independent of ControlZ.

Data Task Manager handles

The app stores tasks, activities, completion status, dates, and related preferences locally on your Mac. When you import or export, the app reads or writes only the files and folders you choose via the sandbox.

Network connections

Task Manager does not require network access for core task management. Any future network features would be optional and user-initiated.

Defects Manager

Defects Manager is a macOS catalogue for known defects, workarounds, and HTML documentation export. It does not require a Defects Manager cloud account and is independent of ControlZ.

Data Defects Manager handles

The app stores defect records (title, description, workaround, status, app/version/build context, publish and developers-only flags) in local SwiftData on your Mac. Imported Markdown and exported HTML are files you control.

Network connections

Defects Manager does not require network access for core defect tracking. Import and export use local files only.

Feedback and support

If you contact support from the website or in-app Feedback, the information you provide may include your email address, description, screenshots, crash logs, device model, OS version, and app version. Do not send production bridge tokens, API keys, or passwords in support requests.

Data deletion

  • Delete the app from your devices to remove local app data.
  • Revoke bridge tokens and passwords in each provider’s settings (Home Assistant, Hue, Sonos, HS4, and so on).
  • For Hue Analyzer or Hue Test App, remove saved bridges in-app and delete the app to clear Keychain entries for that bundle ID.
  • For My Competitors iCloud Sync or iCloud backups, manage or delete CloudKit data via Apple ID / iCloud settings and in-app maintenance tools; disable sync before deleting the app when you want the fastest cleanup.
